Mass Applying for Jobs Isn’t Working Anymore (What Actually Works Now)

I asked a simple question on Reddit:

How did you find your last job?

Over 150 people responded.

It was real experiences from people in the market right now. And it confirmed something I’ve been seeing for a while.

Mass applying for jobs used to work. In today’s market, it’s becoming one of the least effective job search strategies.

Mass applying is NOT the strategy people think it is. Because when you strip all the answers back, a very clear pattern showed up.

So what’s actually working in today’s job market?

Most people didn’t get their jobs from applying cold, they got them through people.

Former colleagues.

Friends.

Someone they’d worked with before.

They were opportunities that weren’t even posted yet.

“Every job I’ve gotten that actually worked out came through someone I’d worked with before. Never through a job board.”

This quote tells you everything!

Then there was another group. People who didn’t apply at all, recruiters reaching out or hiring managers messaging them directly. Decision makers noticing profiles and deciding to start the conversation.

“I have more success when I’m contacted by a recruiter than when I apply.”

These people are not chasing opportunities, they are working on making themselves visible enough to be FOUND!

And yes, there were people who secured roles through traditional job boards. Through Indeed, LinkedIn, and direct company websites. But even these stories came with context, talking about timing, luck and good old persistence.

“I applied to tons of positions and only had 3 interviews… last one was 1.5 years ago.”

That’s the reality for a lot of people right now, and this quote stands out because it wasn’t just about what has worked, its also about how people are feeling.

Job seekers are frustrated, exhausted and feeling ignored.

“500+ applications… and nothing. Just ghosted.”

Because some of us are treating job searching like it’s 2015, we’re mass applying, trying so hard and finding all the strength to just keep going.

But the reality is that the market has changed. Technology has advanced, there are more candidates, more of a global market, more competition, more noise. Which means applying cold puts you right in the middle of it all. One of hundreds. Sometimes thousands and when you’re in that position, even strong candidates will get overlooked.

This thread really showed me that the people who moved forward weren’t necessarily the most qualified, but they were the most connected, visible, or positioned, they did not start from zero, they worked on their networks and leveraged their contacts.

“Networking worked really well for me… I had people sending me references, contacts and job postings.”

This is exactly why I talk so much about personal branding and career positioning, its not a trend, it’s becoming necessary. When recruiters are reaching out directly, when roles are being filled before they are even advertised, and when referrals are outperforming applications, you cannot be relying on one strategy. You need to be in the mix of it all, sometimes before a job even exists!

It’s a tough market, there are loads of layoffs, and there are just a lot of strong candidates on the market right now, with more coming. This means the bar hasn’t just gone up;  but the way you get noticed has also changed completely.

So if your entire strategy is applying and hoping something sticks, it’s time to rethink it.

I’ve linked the Reddit thread here, if you want to see just how real this is.
