A lot of people are going to read this headline and feel relieved.
Finally. My degree doesn’t define me.
And that relief is justified. According to NACE’s 2026 research, 92% of employers who’ve hired through a skills based process say those candidates outperform degree screened hires, and 88% say it’s reduced their mismatched hires too. The data is clear and the direction is obvious. Skills first hiring works, companies know it, and adoption is growing year on year.
But what most career advice misses when it covers this story is that knowing the market is shifting in your favour is one thing. Actually being positioned to benefit from it is another.
It’s important to understand that the application filter hasn’t disappeared. It’s just changed.
When a recruiter or hiring manager stops screening by degree, they need to replace it. They filter by something else, your visibility, your reputation, whether your name comes up before you even apply.
I’ve been in recruitment for 15 years and sat on hundreds of panels, and the candidates who moved fastest through processes were never the most credentialed. They were the most clear. You could tell immediately what they stood for, what they’d built, what problem they solved.
That clarity doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of someone who has invested in how they show up, online and in rooms, long before a job opening appears.
What this means practically
Your visibility, like your LinkedIn profile, needs to tell a story, not just list a history. Your online presence needs to reflect the professional you are today, not the job titles you’ve held. Your network needs to contain people who would say your name in a room when the right opportunity comes up, because in a skills based hiring market, that introduction or referral is often what gets you into the process in the first place.
So, the proof is here. Skills based hiring produces better hires and companies are actively moving toward it. The opportunity in front of mid-career professionals right now is genuinely one of the best in years, but only if you’re visible enough to be found.
You have the experience. You have the track record. You have proof of what you can do. Now make sure the right people can actually see it.
