Morgan Stanley Layoffs: 2,500 Jobs Cut Despite Record Profits

Written by:

Morgan Stanley has announced layoffs impacting roughly 2,500 employees which is around 3% of its global workforce.

Whats surprising about this is that the cuts have come despite a record financial year for the bank in 2025.

Their layoffs have not been confined to a single team, instead spanning across the banks 3 core divisions: Investment Banking & Trading, Wealth Management and, Investment Management

So with record breaking profits, why the layoffs?

It’s what you always hear.

Strategic restructuring, operational efficiency, performance based reductions (the WORST), location changes including offshoring, and of course Tech & AI adoption.

Layoffs today are not about one single factor. They are about many things and framed as many other things.

This is further evidence that your performance does not protect your career.

Your loyalty does not protect your career.

You need to be visible all the time, strengthen your positioning and branding so when change happens you are prepared.

Ok enough about us, onto the staff who were laid off 👇

5 Tips for Employees Impacted by Morgan Stanley Layoffs

If you’re one of the professionals affected, the most important thing to remember is that a layoff does not erase your career value. But it does require a strategic reset.

Here are five things I would recommend focusing on immediately.

1. Control the narrative

How you position this moment matters. Frame it clearly as part of a broader restructuring, not a personal failure. This is not about you.

2. Reconnect with your network quickly

Many opportunities emerge within weeks of layoffs through former colleagues, clients and industry contacts. It’s easy to see a pay check and think about taking time off. You can still take some time, but keep networking efforts strong.

3. Document your impact

Before moving on, capture your key achievements while they are fresh. Deals closed, revenue influenced, teams led and anything else that will become critical evidence in outreach and interviews.

4. Watch industry shifts

Large banks restructuring often signal broader sector changes. Pay attention to which areas are hiring and where investment is flowing.

5. Invest in visibility

In volatile markets, performance alone is not protection. Professionals who build visibility, networks and reputation tend to recover faster from disruption.

Bonus if you’re up for it. Document your redeployment journey. It’ll help with visibility and could get you in front of the right people quicker. You’ll be surprised at how many people might be willing to help!

The Morgan Stanley layoffs are part of a broader trend happening across Wall Street and corporate America and other parts of the world.

Companies are restructuring and changing so often now for a variety of reasons. It’s not always because they are failing. Even thriving companies constantly change and churn.

The lesson is simple.

Career stability no longer comes from staying in one organisation.

It comes from staying adaptable, visible and connected to the market

Goodluck!
