We’re in a Global Talent War and Companies Are Still Hiring Like It’s 2015

The Talent War is Global & Most Companies Are Recruiting Like its 2015.  

For probably the first time in history, talent is more global than the companies trying to hire it.  

Global talent doesn’t just mean remote workers who stay overseas, it also means skilled professionals who are willing to relocate when the opportunity (or the visa) is right.

Companies and countries are now competing on both fronts.   Borders are either optional or non existent.

Your favourite corporate influencer or podcaster is hiring remote only, visas are flexible and teams are everywhere and nowhere.  

COVID came and said ‘surprise’ the workforce is borderless.

So why are organisations still hiring as if talent can only be within a 12km radius of their office?  

Meanwhile Countries across the GCC, Europe & Asia are out here playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers.
They’re rolling out:
Digital nomad visas
Tax incentives for remote workers
Fast track pathways for STEM, healthcare and AI talent
Programs to attract entrepreneurs & specialised workers
Even relocation packages (hello, Portugal)  

These countries want our talent. They are happy to have us in the lagging stages of global talent. They understand the assignment. Make it easy for global workers to bring their skills across borders (specifically to our borders).  

Guys, the future is going to be SO INTERESTING. Jobs are crossing borders faster than you can upload your Instagram December Holiday Dump.
People are out there LIVING THEIR BEST LIVES, like its literally no one’s business, working from Bali, Dubai, Lisbon, Seoul…pick a timezone, its yours.  

Why opening up your company to remote jobs matters:  

Local talent shortages: are the worst they’ve ever been in many industries; think healthcare, engineering, AI. The demand is global.  
New Zealand launched the “Tech Talent Visa” to fast track overseas workers because they couldn’t fill roles fast enough domestically.  

People expect options: we want remote first, international mobility, flexible contracts, work that fits YOUR life, not the other way around.  
GitLab operates in over 60 countries with no office at all, and STILL manages to scale faster than organisations with 11 floors of meeting rooms they don’t use.    

Smart companies are widening talent nets: They’re hiring faster, cheaper, with much more diversity. And they are not staying quiet about it!  
The UAE introduced a Virtual Work Visa allowing people to live in Dubai while working for foreign companies, instantly making it a magnet for global professionals.    

Could you imagine governments around the world opened up their talent pools internationally? They would tap into experts who built the very programs they need. They could leverage off other countries public policy so easily. They could literally hire people who developed initiatives that they NEED. Public Policy would level up overnight.  

Need the person/team who implemented a world class cyber program in Singapore? Hire them
Need someone who built UKs workforce planning model? Hire them
Need whoever ran healthcare transformation in Canada? Hire them  

It won’t happen today, it won’t happen tomorrow, but in a decade or so we will see countries that seem like they evolved overnight all because they were early adaptors of the global talent market.

Look at China right now. You know what I’m taking about…  

Talent is not just local.
It’s mobile, its ‘local’ talent who lives elsewhere, it’s happier employees who are giving you their best work.  

The organisations who are embracing this shift are winning.
The one’s still resisting are recruiting like its 2015 and wondering why performance is in the dumps.
