Future-Proofing Talent: Embrace Skills-Based Strategies

Written by:

Over 51% of business leaders are worried about future talent shortages. Only 32% feel confident in their organisation’s skill readiness for the future. It’s clear there is urgency for change (Workday, Global State of Skills Report, March 2025).

This has prompted a shift toward skills based hiring and development efforts, to boost productivity, innovation and agility.

The report tells us it’s time to:

Transition to skills based talent strategies:

WHY – this is no longer in the ‘future’, it’s an immediate advantage. More than 55% of Workday survey participates have implemented these strategies with another 23% planning to start this year. This approach will attract, develop and retain talent. It will also close gaps and enhance workplace flexibility, as well as build robust talent pipelines and ultimately future proof your organisation.

Combine AI and Human Ingenuity:

WHY – While AI is absolutely essential for efficiency and accuracy, the human element remains crucial for impactful transformation. A second Workday report found that skills like ‘relationship-building, empathy, conflict resolution, and ethical decision-making are critical for success in an AI-driven economy.’ Highlighting the need to combine the two for success.

Focus on employee development:

WHY – it’s going to be a TIGHT market once future skills are embedded in the workforce. Rather than competing for external talent, develop this inhouse. This not only enhances satisfaction but will help with retention and job opportunities.

Acknowledge challenges & opportunities:

WHY – Implementing skills first strategies won’t happen overnight. Be realistic about the time required for reskilling. Anticipate and prepare for resistance to change. Recognise the need for a comprehensive infrastructure overhaul.

Leading Examples of Embracing the Shift to Skills-First Talent Strategies:

SAP: Integrated AI into their SuccessFactors platform to gain insights into employee skills, enabling better talent management and development strategies.

Deloitte: Utilises AI tools to analyse workforce skills and predict future talent needs; proactively developing their employees to align skills with business objectives.

Accenture: Employs AI algorithms to assess employee skills and offer personalised development opportunities.

Skills based talent strategies are more than just a trend; they’re essential for navigating the future workforce landscape.

Leverage AI to make this process more efficient and to stay competitive.
