| Can you believe it?! 2024 is OVER! Well not quite yet, but we are almost there. We survived another tumultuous year. Well done everyone! In January 2024, just as we were all returning to work, I listed some HR/Talent Predictions for the year. You can view that article here. Let’s see how they held up: 1. More offshore work – In October, it was reported that KPMG planned to send 44,000 hours (20FTE) of work offshore in their IT access and security space. Why? Talent Scarcity and cost savings. In a world where startups are prevalent, many jobs are being sent offshore to save money and access better skill sets. Headspace has its innovation centre of excellence in Mexico! And did you know WhatsApp relies heavily on offshore talent? 2. Cybersecurity, a top in-demand skill – Organisations are still struggling to plug the cyber security talent gap. The World Economic Forum believes there is a global shortfall in cybersecurity talent that needs to be tackled rapidly. The skills are just not available at the pace we require them across the globe. It’s time to seriously invest in reskilling/upskilling. 3. Remote work & agility continues to take centre stage – This has been HUGE in Australia in 2024. I don’t think I need to elaborate. The Remote work debate in organisations is alive and well, and 2025 will be interesting in terms of how it lands, and how talent reacts. 4. Death to the CV – I’m not going to send out any plugs on this one (sorry!) because I haven’t seen it done well enough yet…but the CV is dying….I’ll give it 10 years to be extinct. How many swipe-right swipe-left ‘recruit’ apps have you seen this year? I think I have seen about 3 so far. This is just the beginning, and I think soon we will see a really good example of how to assess without CVs, to get it off and running. 5. Changing Priorities for Talent – The cost of living is killing us. For the last 5 or so years, flexibility and L&D has been on the top of the must-have lists. Once the 2024 statistics are in, salary will revert back to being the number 1 factor people are looking for in their next roles. Also, a whole generation has joined us over the last few years, and what they are looking for, is DRAMATICALLY different. 6. Skills shortage debate – Here to stay. Have a read of Australia’s Jobs & Skills Commissioner’s foreword in the 2024 report here. Immigration and reskill/upskill is likely to lead the way. Otherwise, we will revert to offshoring. Skills to take over qualifications – this needs a whole post on its own. Skill shortages impact this, and the drop in tertiary education enrolments will force this prediction to occur. How do you test skills sufficiently? 7. Traditional recruitment methods are out – the old is out to make room for the new! So many examples, swiping right and left, skills assessments, social media, speed recruiting, pipelines, etc How did your 2024 predictions work out? Do you agree with the above? Stay tuned for our 2025 HR and Talent Predictions. I have a feeling its going to be a WILD one! Have a workplace or talent related question for the team at HYRO? We would LOVE to hear from you!
